Winter is a time of merriment and festivity, and for many of us not a little spirit, too. There’s nothing better than stocking up on all the food and drink that brings you cheer - and no party is complete without a special cocktail or three to complement the celebrations.
Put aside the snowballs - here we’ve listed our ultimate gentleman’s Winter cocktails for the man about town and his guests to enjoy this season.
A mimosa is the perfect traditional drink to give the festivities a good kickstart, most commonly served as a brunch cocktail. Refreshing, light and easy to make, this makes a great way to launch a day of celebrating without over-doing things!
To make the perfect mimosa, mix 3 parts champagne with 1 part freshly squeezed orange juice - and to make it that bit more special, add a hit of triple sec.
The Old Fashioned
The Old Fashioned remains a staple cocktail in any man’s cocktail repertoire, with a simple mix of whiskey, bitters and sugar. A favourite of Mad Men’s Don Draper, this cocktail is perfect for enjoying by the fire on a cold Winter’s day.
To assemble, take an Old Fashioned glass and mix an orange slice, a teaspoon of sugar, bitters, a Maraschino cherry and a little water until the sugar has dissolved, and then top with ice and bourbon whiskey.
The Mulled Drink
Mulled wine goes hand-in-hand with Winter, providing the perfect spicy warming cocktail to ward off the winter’s chill. If the traditional mulled red wine drink has lost a little of its appeal, why not try one of these creative alternatives!
- Ginger and Scotch
This twist on tradition adds a lovely warming kick to your mulled wine - after brewing the traditional version of the cocktail, add a splash of whiskey and chunk of ginger to really warm yourself up!
Mulled cider is a lighter, refreshing alternative to mulled wine and is absolutely delicious. Apple cider remains the favourite, but you could even mix things up with a pear or berry cider for a very festive cocktail.
- Rum Punch
Rum punch remains a firm favourite for Winter parties, and warming things up with a mulled rum punch for all your guests will make the perfect fruity addition. Simply add spices (nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice) to apple juice and sugar and boil, and then top up your punch with as much rum as you please!
The After Dessert Delight
A Winter party wouldn’t be the same without a delicious warming cocktail menu on offer to sit back and enjoy after feasting and socialising. Try a coffee cocktail to give you a little extra energy for the evening. Blend strong espresso, kahlua and vodka to make the ultimate after-dessert espresso martini.
